The Peace Arch at the US-Canada border.
This was about Saturday noon. Because of the more rigorous scrutiny at border crossings following 9/11, it took about 45 minutes to get through US Customs.
Apparently the memorializes those responsible for the "Peace Arch." There is a bit of irony here.
About the time I came through here, this stone was becoming an issue in the Seattle area. Some people thought this memorial to the Confederacy, and the naming of the highway the "Jefferson Davis Highway," was a little out of line in this day and age.
The controversy may be a result of the fact that tightened security at the US Border Customs Checkpoint has caused a lot of people to have to sit, and find things to look at. Since this sign is about 10 feet from the highway on the driver's side of the car, it is hard to miss. While sitting and waiting for a dog and trunk check at the border, it is also hard, after seeing this sign, not to think about things like slavery, and the other causes of the American Civil war.
Seattle downtown coming up. The Space Needle is visible in the distance to the right.
